What to Do If My Pet Is Lost?
It can be so traumatising to realise that your pet is missing. You are not supposed to relax hoping that it will come back. You should start looking for it immediately by letting your neighbours know about it and searching for it around your neighbourhood area. Ask the neighbours if they have seen your cat or dog. Call out the pet’s name while checking around. You can do this at night when it’s quiet. It could be trapped somewhere in the compound. Use a flashlight to search small places where pets hide. Check under parked vehicles, inside drains or sheds.
Make visits to animal shelters around where animal control officers take the stray pets. Not just for one day, make several visits after two or three days, and file a lost report with every shelter around your home. Ask to see shelters lost and found records. It’s also advisable to notify the police because there could also be a chance that your pet was stolen because they also take in lost pets when the animal shelters and services are closed. Pets that have identity tags have better chances of getting returned to their owners. Permanent identification methods such as microchips are also advisable to have to make it easier to locate your pet.
Make advertisements notices and post them at community centres, shops, libraries, pet supply stores, pet supply stores and also in the media. Include your pet’s details containing age, sex, colour, breed and any special makings. Remember to include your contact location and also respond to any advert that is close to your pet’s description. You can also post the photos of your pet on social media platforms and write “lost cat” or whichever the pet is. Give your current contact information and address.
Be careful when talking to a stranger who claims to have picked up a stray pet. Let him/her describe the found pet before you give them your pet’s information. Others will insist that you send them money so that they will return your pet.
Make sure that you don’t give up on the search. It might take longer than expected but eventually, you’ll reunite with your friend. Ensure that your animals have warm beds to come back to.
